5th Grade Forest Program: September 12, 2025

UPCOMING EVENTS AND REMINDERS

* Homework: Students have been reading through Ps. 8 in preparation for a fill in the blank test on September 26 but most importantly to tuck those words into our hearts! They have also been working on reading minutes. Those minutes are due on Monday and need a parent signature. Please encourage your child to work through their homework and figure out what places and times work best for them to complete that work.

*Appointments/Pick-Up: Please email the office (pr@hollandchristian.org) and me (cdezwaan@hollandchristian.org) or call the school if your child will be picked up early or arrive late. This helps us to make sure students are where they should be and have them ready for when you arrive to pick them up early.

* A reminder that students have Band and Orchestra on Tuesdays and Fridays. Please help them remember to take their instruments.

* Front doors at Pine Ridge open at 7:50 am. Students will be welcomed into the building at that time.

*Are you looking for a way to volunteer? As a school, we would love to give you the opportunity to volunteer and supervise our class for lunch. You would arrive at 11:40, take students through the hot lunch line, and then supervise the class as they eat lunch. Students would be dismissed to the playground for recess at 12:05. If you are interested in helping, please check our sign up! Thank you!

Walk-a-thon: What is Walkathon? Walkathon is an HC-wide fundraiser where elementary students walk to raise money for their school. Each student should have received a letter to aide in helping them raise money. Money is due Wednesday, Sept. 17th

Picture day is THURSDAY! Please return your form asap and remember this is where you can also order a yearbook.

Please remind your child that there are no trading cards allowed at school. They have started to cause hurt feelings with friends and interfere with outdoor play. Please enjoy those at home.

Family Math Fun Festival on Sunday, September 28, 2:00-4:00 PM at Hope College. A free event and open to families with children in Grades K-8. Our festival features a wide variety of interactive low-floor, high-ceiling tasks that will engage families in creative problem solving that won't even feel like mathematics! We'll also be giving away goody bags to all participants containing math games for continued practice at home. https://bit.ly/FamilyMathSeptember

Curriculum Highlights

BIBLE: We have been working through the structure of the Bible, using a timeline (and ARCH books). We have also started to take a look at the gospels and how they are written from different perspectives.

MATH: We continue to review making equivalent fractions, comparing fractions and then converting fractions and mixed numbers.

READING: We have spent time this week imagining what might be happening between the scenes in our text. We use those details plus what we already know to help us determine how are characters might be feeling. We are doing this work as we read Frindle together.

SCIENCE: We continued exploring water quality this week at Paw Paw Park. We looked at the sediment in the water (turbidity), temperature, pH levels, and macroinvertebrates (bugs) in the water.

We looked closely at our data, compared two pieces of data by graphing our data points, noticed patterns in our data, and asked questions about what we were noticing.
